Corridors & Beautification

The Greater Titusville Renaissance Steering Committee recognized immediately that our corridors need improvement. Since these are the avenues by which our visitors first view our community, it is imperative that they present a “first-class” impression. The Corridor Committee portion of the Steering Committee decided to tackle three main corridors: Washington Ave (US-1), Cheney Highway (SR-50) and Garden Street (SR-406). In order to take best advantage of our initial group of volunteers, the team was divided into three sub-committees as noted below.

  • Properties
This sub-committee will work on finding a way to improve the look of many of the degraded properties. The first step will be to do a survey of properties along all three corridors. Additional volunteers might be required to complete the survey in a timely fashion. A letter of introduction will be prepared so that all property owners will understand that this initiative is intended to provide real assistance, not just criticism. Once we have identified the properties most in need of action, we will be looking for creative ways to help the owners make necessary improvements. This will likely require coordination with the fund-raising committee.

  • Medians and Landscaping
The Medians and Landscaping sub-committee will be looking for creative ideas and actions to improve the landscaping look of all three corridors. We expect to be looking at such themes as Florida-friendly plants or “zeroscaping”, more trees and anything else the committee might imagine to make the medians look better. Because these corridors are under the control of the Florida Department of Transportation, this committee may face a number of implementation challenges. However, from a positive perspective, it offers the greatest opportunity for creativity as we attempt to beautify the most travelled roads in our community.

  • Litter Control
Litter control remains a persistent problem on all Titusville corridors. While the ultimate goal is to eliminate liter at the source, the initial actions will require regular clean-up activity. We expect to schedule monthly cleanup days as well as expand the Adopt a Road program to remove litter as quickly as possible. Concurrent with cleanups, we expect to create new educational programs and associated publicity to convince people not to litter.
The three corridor sub-committees offer volunteers a chance to make a real difference in our community. The ideas outlined above are only an early sampling of some of the actions that have been envisioned to date. Ultimately we will rely on the creativity, initiate and hard work of many dedicated citizens to bring vision to reality. The Greater Titusville Renaissance is not just about how we look; it is also about how we think about our community. Citizen concern and action will make the difference.
