Keep Brevard Beautiful/Greater Titusville Renaissance Litter Cleanup

As some already know, I go out on Friday mornings, as often as my schedule permits, to pick up litter on local roads other than the three corridors.  If anyone would like to join me, look out for these events on the events calendar.  I’m always looking for help.

Greater Titusville Renaissance

I was looking through the blogs this afternoon and realized that while we had categories for each of the active committees, we did not have a more general category for observations about Renaissance itself.  I think it is vital for all of us who have committed to this project to understand why it is so important to the prosperity of greater Titusville.  We are at a crossroads.  The combination of a bad economy and the loss of Space Center jobs has pushed us into a corner from which only we can extricate ourselves, and Renaissance is the means to that end.  While we must succeed, we must also see this as that rare opportunity in time when we can remake greater Titusville into the kind of community of which we can all be proud.  Commissioner Fisher and I have said from the very beginning of this adventure, that Renaissance is just as much about how we think about ourselves as it is about how we look.  At the next annual meeting on April 19th, I will be speaking about that mindset.  I believe that for us to be successful, we must also change how we think about GTR as well.  I look forward to seeing you all at that meeting to discuss that idea.

Balancing Nature and Commerce

On Wednesday evening and all day Thursday last week, many community leaders and some from outside Titusville were privileged to hear a series of presentations on “Balancing Nature and Commerce.  This was a shortened version of a three-day course of the same name that five of us attended last year at the national taining center of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  We were so impressed with what we heard that we knew we had to bring at least two of the speakers to Titusville, along with a number of local speakers to inform us on related topics.   If there was one common theme that was apparent in most of the presentations, it was that for Titusville to prosper, we must not lose our unique character.  So while we all want to see new stores, restaurants, and businesses, we must build these enterprises in a way that makes Titusville unique along east coast Florida.  We have so much to offer here, but it is only by providing an unusual and unique experience for our visitors, will we be able to attract new and return guests.  This is a time for all of us to step up and make Titusville the kind of city of which we can all be proud.

Beauty Begets Business

Who would want to do business in an unattractive location?  To attract the best for Titusville, we must build a beautiful place.  This has been one of my ongoing themes for as long as I have been on the City Council.  At last something appears to be happening in Titusville.   As I drive around our community, I see fresh paint and reconstruction all over town.   Have you seen the new Mr. Submarine and La Bamba restaurants?  Have you seen the new Itani Pharmacy on Garden Street?  have you seen the new location of Bo’s Kayaks on Hopkins, next door to the Titusville Playhouse and the new StoneFire art studio at Miracle City Mall?   In addition to those four, I’ve begun to notice fresh paint and landscaping improvements at a number of other locations.  These improvements are critical to the Greater Titusville Renaissance, because I think it means that we are beginning to turn the corner.   I believe that is the case and there seem to be other citizens and business owners who are drawing the same conclusion.   Next month we will be holding our first GTR annual meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday April 19, at the Holiday Inn.  At this meeting we will be celebrating our successes and discussing a plan of action for the next year.  I hope to see many of you there as we charter a new course for our community.
